Definition: An underwriter is an employee of the
insurance carrier. It is the underwriter’s job to verify a policy is written properly. It does not matter if the policy is written by a licensed
agent or if you filled everything out online to purchase the policy, an underwriter will verify everything is in order with the policy. Underwriters make sure policies follow all the guidelines and
discounts are applied accurately. An underwriter has the final say when it comes to insurance policies.
Examples:
An agent issues a new car insurance policy. The new policy is forwarded to the underwriter for review. The underwriter finds an at-fault accident which is not being surcharged on the policy. The underwriter properly lists the claim and notifies the agent of the change in premium.
