As a new boat owner, you will come across lots of different boat lingo you may never have heard before. A hull identification number, also known as HIN, is a series of letters and numbers assigned to each individual boat. The hull identification number has a couple of different jobs.
HIN Identifies the Boat for Law Enforcement
Having an individual identification number assigned to each boat allows for tracking of boats. When you register your boat at the department of motor vehicles, your ownership is entered into a database. Police enforcement use the hull identification number if the boat is stolen.
HIN Identifies the Boat for Insurance Purposes
Insurance carriers require the HIN when purchasing insurance on a boat. It ensures the boat covered on the insurance policy is the same as the boat needing repairs due to a claim.
Where Can You Find the HIN?
Boats made after 1984 have two hull identification numbers attached to them. One HIN located in an easy to view location on the starboard outboard side of the hull and one HIN in an unexpected location under a fitting or piece of hardware. You can also find the hull identification number on the boat’s registration or prior boat insurance policy.
