How to File an Auto Insurance Claim

A number of people go twenty years without ever filing a claim on their auto insurance policy. It can be an intimidating task if you have never filed a claim before. You may not know who to call, what information you need, or if your policy has the appropriate coverage to cover the loss.

Call your Agent or Customer Service Rep

Most companies have a 24/7 claims service center that is available to all policy holders. However, an insurance agent is a wonderful resource to help with filing a claim. Both the company's service center phone number and the agent's phone number should be listed on the policy. If you cannot locate your policy check the proof of insurance, the phone book, or the internet for claim phone numbers. It depends on your state how long you have to file an auto insurance claim. Some states do not limit the amount of time you have while others have strict guidelines. Do not procrastinate when filing a claim. However unless it's urgent, it is recommend waiting until normal business hours to file the claim directly with your agent to get the best personalized service.

Collect all Applicable Information

The proper information at the time of filing a claim is important and can simplify the process. Circumstances can vary widely and some incidents require more information than others. A good rule of thumb is you can never have too much information. Obtain the following information if it applies to you.

  • Date and time of loss
  • Location of loss
  • Year, Make, and Model of all vehicles involved
  • Name of drivers and passengers
  • Contact info for you, other parties, and witnesses
  • List of injuries
  • Description of accident
  • Description of vehicle damage
  • Police report number
  • Current location of your vehicle
  • The body shop you want to do the repairs
Find Out if the Claim is Covered

Determining coverage can be tricky if you are not familiar with all the insurance terminology. The quickest and most accurate way to determine if you have a covered claim is to ask your insurance agent. An agent can answer a lot of questions about a claim without notifying the insurance company directly. In some situations, a claim can be so complicated the agent may advise to file the claim and see what the claim representative determines. Most companies do not increase your premiums if they determine you are not at fault or if you do not have applicable coverage. Ask your agent or customer service representative if a claim will affect your rates.

Filing a claim for the first time can be scary especially if you are facing a major loss. Insurance is one of those things you hope you'll never use. Keep it simple; make sure your insurance information is in your glove box so you always have access to it, not to mention in most states it's the law. Know who to contact, collect the necessary information, and find out if your policy covers your current loss. It should only take five to ten minutes to file the claim and get you headed back in the right direction.
